11 Years Ago

11 years ago yesterday Matt asked me to be his girlfriend while at a Jr. High dance. I was in 8th grade and he was a freshman.

I use the term dating loosely seeing as it was still over a year before Matt could drive and over 2 years before I could drive.

I like him and while I was excited simply to have a boyfriend, I was excited that he was the one that was going to be my boyfriend. I was thinking today about the things that I liked about him, here they are: Was a boy.He was cute.Good at baseball.Talked to me.

All great reasons to like a boy right? I mean when you are 14 you aren't really looking for a husband, and not only that but you don't even know what you would want in a husband. We grew up together and we are each who we are because of each other.

11 years later I watched my husband finish his first half marathon and I'm really proud of him. I'm proud of who he is in general. My list of reasons why I love him is very different than my reasons why I liked him back in 8th grade. He loves me.He loves our daughter and is a fantastic father.He does the dishes.He is classy.He shows respect.He is a mature adult who can take care of himself.He never makes me feel uncomfortable.He is himself, in spite of and because of his past and present circumstances.

Funny what things are important to you when you are 14 verses 25.
