Norah choked. Not like coughing oh this feels weird choke, but the silent kind of choking. I had given her a piece of celery about 5 inches long to chew on while I was making dinner. She had celery before with no issues but as I was handing it to her I asked Matt to make sure he kept an eye on her with it - she was in her high chair and he was sitting next to her at the table working on something. I went about fixing dinner.
Then it happened. I heard a strange noise and looked up and saw her face and new she was choking. She opened her mouth to gag but nothing was coming out - not the piece of celery and not any sort of noise. As we were trying to get her out of her chair to help her I was cursing high chair straps - they are a bit difficult when two freaked out parents have their hands on the straps trying to get a choking kid out! There should be some sort of easy emergency release button on those suckers or something right?? It felt like forever but really she was actually about to cough it up before we were even able to get her unstrapped. In fact, the whole thing from the moment we realized she was choking to her coughing it up was probably only 5-6 seconds, but it certainly felt longer!
I've been terrified of her choking since before she was born. It's been all I have in me to not dice up every thing she eats into microscopic pieces even though she has 6.25 teeth. While it was the first time she choked I'm sure it won't be the last. I am CPR certified and that included an infant segment but I would really like for both Matt and I to take a infant/toddler specific CPR class - I know they offered them in Florida so I figured they would have them here in Indiana. I found one about 45 minutes from me and they are only $15 a person and it includes CPR+first aid which covers things such as choking and broken bones - a pretty fair price if you ask me. Here they are: http://www.ste.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=1326
Have you taken anything like this? If so do you feel pretty confident in the skills you learned?

We did and even though I still pray we will never have to use it, we feel a little more prepared now! ;) Whew, way to cough it out Norah!
ReplyDeleteGood to know that it makes you have a bit more confidence! I'm very glad she got it up herself and we didn't have to try to do it for her.
DeleteI have been a lifeguard and first responder (EMT) for 14 years. My daughter choked last week and I screamed for my husband in a panicked "SHE'S CHOKING!" I flipped her over and did all the correct steps, but it was still the longest 8 seconds of my life. Even with training, it doesn't make it easier. But as a CPR instructor, I still highly suggest it.

I'm loving your blog!

Thanks for stopping by! I hear that it tends to just kick in when you are put into the situation but I worry that if she did need my assistance I'd just stand there like a dummy :) It's funny how a few seconds can feel like forever in those circumstances isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteYikes! How scary! I am CPR certified and never had thought about taking an infant/toddler specific course. After reading this I am definitely going to see what's available in my area!
