Veggies vs. Junk Food

Apparently teenagers and children will eat fruits and veggies. Now I know this might seem mind blowing to you, but I swear to you it is true! They just need to be offered them.

I made an observation this weekend that might be obvious but it really got me thinking. We had a pool party with some of the kids in Matt's youth group this weekend and it was a ton of fun! Typically stuff like this is crawling with Doritos, candy and any type of junk you can think of. The host of the party didn't have any of that usual stuff out, instead she had carrots, celery, apples, watermelon, kiwi, cantaloupe, bananas and grapes. Guess what? Not one kid complained. They chowed down on it. The carrots were gone very quickly as was the watermelon and bananas. Not one kid seemed disappointed that there was no chips or candy.

So it might sound obvious that our kids (even teens!) will eat what is offered, but I think we forget that. We assume they will just let healthy food go to waste. Even with our one year old daughter, she certainly perfers juicy watermelon to dry crunchy chips. If I offer her Doritos (which I don't think she's ever actually had) she would eat them. If I offer her cantaloupe she will eat it. Hopefully by offering her healthy foods and not junk food when she is little will develop a taste for the healthier stuff and maybe in the end she won't even care very much about eating the junk (sadly... I do like the junk... ugh).

Jumpy, Jumpy, Jumpy

Normally the phrase "Jumpy, Jumpy, Jumpy" is used by Matt and I when Norah is in her jumper. Tonight it applied to the hubs and I (and 10 jr. high and high school kids). We went to Indianapolis Sky Zone in Fishers (north east of downtown Indy). You can go to their website here. Their Facebook group seems to be a better way to check them out though.

The Main jump area

Now I hadn't jumped on a trampoline in a very long time. Probably since I was about 12. It was a blast though! It is $6 for each 30 minutes and it includes your shoe rental and taxes. We did 60 minutes and that seemed about perfect, and the kids thought so too. Man is it a workout though! I woke up this morning and a few of my muscles were sore.

The place is separated into a few sections: Main jump area, foam pit, the basketball hoops and two dodgeball courts. Everything was open to our group except the dodgeball. This was the only thing I didn't like about the place. They allowed both of the dodgeball courts to be booked out to private parties at the same time. Our kids really wanted to play dodgeball but couldn't because of this. I think it is great that you can rent out part of it for a private party but I think they should limit it to one at a time so that one of the dodgeball courts would be free for the public. Other than that though everything was great.

Here are a few pictures (most are blurry because of all the jumping):
Matt's in the middle and behind him (white and red shirts) are two from our group.

The foam pit was pretty neat. One word of caution... it is difficult to get out. I ended up having Matt help me out and then I fell with oh so much grace upon getting out.
