I Admit It
I admit it... Norah watches tv. Not all day long every day, but enough that she has a few shows that she likes (Dora & My Gym At Home). I actually don't feel bad about the My Gym At Home show. She gets pretty excited when it comes on and recently she has started to mimic the "leader". It's fun watching her put her arms out to the side and move them when the leader says to. My favorite though is when they say, "Show us those muscles" and she curls her arms up and lets out a grunting "errrggg!"
I used to think I didn't want her to watch tv, and while sometimes it is a babysitter in the sense that it allows me to put away dishes, sweep the floor or heck - go to the bathroom, it also is helping her to understand things. I wouldn't say that it teaches her a lot, but the shows I let her watch reinforce some of the things I work on her with - such as where her toes are.
Do you let your little one watch tv? If so what shows? Do they have educational value?

Although not my kid, the little boy I nanny does watch a lot of cartoons, and most of them are pretty educational. Most are Disney Jr. with the occasional Dora or Team Umizoomi thrown in for good measure. Even when we play, it is often on in the background. I was pretty darn amazed when, at two and a half, (the first time I had him in the car) we came to a stop sign and he said "Look! It's a red octagon!" and his mother readily admits it comes from his TV shows. There are obviously limits to what TV shows can teach, but it's definitely not all bad!
ReplyDeleteWe started off with Baby Einstein -- my daughter loved that show when she was 18 months or so. We'd watch it together before her nap time.
ReplyDeleteNow they get maybe an hour a day -- usually PBS or a video of some PBS type of show. I agree, sometimes it is a nice addition to be able to talk about something they saw on the show and how they are trying to learn that same concept.
