Operation "Bye Bye Binky"
When we introduced a pacifier to Norah she was about 2 weeks old. I previously didn't really care either way if she took one but she had an intense need to suck and she was using me for a pacifier and that was tough for me. It didn't affect her nursing and so I figured why not. We established only giving it to her for sleeping and other than rare super fussy moments she hasn't used it much during the day. I certainly do not regret giving it to her and it has been very helpful on the sleeping front.
Norah is now 17 months old and while I would be fine with her using it still since she just sleeps with it, it is really affecting both her and our sleep. Every single night it falls out of her mouth and usually to the floor causing her to wake up and it's a battle to get her back to sleep and often it resulted with her back in our bed because it was just easier that way. So basically for the last few weeks none of us has gotten a good solid night's sleep. Well pretty much ever since I wrote the post about how she'd been sleeping well... she must have read it.
We figure if we're going to take it, it is best to do it a few months before Wesley gets here because if we don't we'd probably find it a year later and her still have it.
So last night started our Operation Bye Bye Binky. It took an hour and 15 minutes of her crying (the husband and I took turns sitting next to her) She was angry and would go to the side of the crib that was further from us and cry. It was hard because I knew if we gave in she'd be asleep within 2-3 minutes. I hated having her cry like that but I know no matter when we took it she would react like that. Thankfully at the hour 15 minute mark she laid down and held Matt's hand and fell asleep.
She slept all night without as much as a sound coming from her monitor. She woke up plenty happy and doesn't seem to remember that it was a struggle to get to sleep.
We all slept better. Now I'm just praying that over the next few nights it is less of a battle and that very soon she doesn't even realize she doesn't have the paci.

Here's hoping the next few nights keep improving! That's awesome that she slept great without it (eventually). I'm anxious to see how this goes for you as I have quite the binky addict on my hands.
ReplyDeleteI hope that pulling her off the pacifier is working out for you guys. It's always tough those first few nights. My first was a binky baby and we broke her off of it at 2 (she only used it at night so I waited) but we had some crying fits here and there for about a week. After that, it's like the thing never existed in the first place. Good luck.
